This afternoon around 3:00pm either it or another one came and searched out the hummer bird feeder. What caught my attention was the loud clicking sound it makes. I began searching the tree near the patio and it zeroed in on its target and made a quick dash to the feeder. Since this is the first one of this season, I shall mark the calendar, so be on the lookout. Arriving about 6:30pm we began to see some of the fall migration. First off we saw several Baltimore Orioles, both Eastern and Western Kingbirds, Eastern Phoebe, Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Belted Kingfisher, and some ten or twelve local birds that we usually see at this spot. All this within the wetland boardwalk area in about an hour and a half. It appears that the fall migration is beginning and I advise cleaning the binocs and heading out for an evening or morning of fun. Driving on Hugo RD, between Cascade and Purgatory saw Black Vulture like bird having a snack on the road. Time approx 4:15 PM. As I passed by, it flew over fence into pasture. What I saw was a dark, blackish bird with a white tail, (from the top and back.) The whole tail was fanned out and was white! See Sibley page 123. I was expecting a black vulture, but vultures do not have white tails. Anyone have any ideas? Cardinals and juncos first then a house finch, a golden fronted woodpecker, chickadees, both types of titmouse (tufted and black crested) mourning doves and the 6th my first blue jays (which are as bossy as the stellar jays at my feeders in very No. California. What I thought were white crowned sparrows were probably chipping sparrows. I have also enjoyed the songs of either a song sparrow or a hermit thrush. Bad binocs don't help.
